03

Get weekly feedback on your work

If you've tried to work on four-part writing or composing a melody on your own, you'll know the frustration of wondering if you're on the right track. In this programme, you will know if you're going in the right direction, and your complex questions will be addressed directly.

04

Build your compositional skill set in small, achievable steps

The key to mastering the composition skills required in the Grade 6 exam is to learn to be methodical. You will learn to build each skill step by step. Which means you will master each step along the way rather than trying to master the complete skill set all at once. When exam day arrives, you won't be sat in a panic wondering how to solve each problem. You will know - and have already practiced - exactly what to do to achieve success!

05

Take the sting out of the Grade 6 theory exam

Mastering Grade 6 Music Theory builds your compositional skill set with clear, simple steps combined with weekly practice and plenty of tutor feedback along the way. It is designed to make you feel confident in harmonising melodies (question 1), four-part counterpoint (question 2), writing a melody (question 3), and score studies & analysis (questions 4 & 5).

Your musicianship will skyrocket

Aside from achieving exam confidence, you will walk away from this course having deepened your grasp of Baroque and Classical styles. Your new understanding of musical architecture will greatly enhance your sight reading and quick study skills, your ability to memorise music, and your composition skills.

What others say...

"(This is) a brilliant opportunity to learn each step of the harmonisation process, under the clear, warm and expert guidance of Lona and within a supportive online community. Bite size daily challenges that build in complexity and sophistication to the point where you are doing something - that first felt very 'involved' and somewhat impossible - with a real degree of enjoyment and a growing sense of ease."

- Mae Karthäuser

"I would definitely recommend to others. There are no other courses that offer the mentorship, real life videos, walk through support all the way through the course and worksheets. It's a course for every learning style. Whether you're a note taker, auditory learner or practical, it suits everyone."

- Dawn Taylor-Moate

Hi, I'm Lona

When I went to university, I was completely focussed on studying piano. But I quickly found that music theory helped me with so many of my goals. Understanding music theory -

  • Improved my sight reading and quick study skills
  • Made memorising music much easier and more reliable
  • Heightened my musical expression at the piano
  • Gave me confidence as a teacher
  • Eventually led me to composing music

So I have a passion for teaching music theory. It is the key that unlocks all musical treasures. I am offering the Grade 6 Composition Courses not just to help you pass the Grade 6 exam but to give you the transformative experience I know learning music theory can give to your musical life!

"Definitely sign up! Lona is a fabulous teacher who has an unbelievable amount of knowledge on music theory and the rare ability to pass that knowledge on in an understandable way to her students. She also has a huge amount of patience and is totally approachable so you never feel like you can't ask questions."

- Gemma Best

"Lona's training is so carefully designed to build up knowledge, before you know where you are, you're doing it - I was four-part writing so comfortably! Lona steps you through the process carefully and patiently that it becomes effortless. If you're wanting this for Grade 6 it is a 'must do' course. It will not only help towards Grade 6 level theory but develops one's own musicality."
